So I decided to knit the first time toe-up and they fit like a glove! I did not have any problems with the short rows. The only problem for me was the transition after the heel flap: as the 2nd and 3rd needle are not being knitted there was a hole when I had to knit over all 4 needles again after knitting the heel flap.

But Vala in the Ravelry-forumsaved me - again. She advised me to move one stitch of the 2nd and 3rd needle to the 1st and 4th needle and to pick up additionally 2 stitches, which are being knitted together in the following round. That's just perfect! It may sound a bit confusing, hence whoever wants to get detailled info, can send me a comment. I will try to explain this step better.

The several unravellings I had to do gave me plenty of opportunities to try this out and it worked each time.

I think that I'll knit toe-up socks in future whenever possible. I had to adapt the pattern a bit but in my opinion they really look good. I am really satisfied and they directly go into my bag for the hospital (that one I hopefully won't have to use)

Soweit - so gut. Also los.

Danke sagt
Gabriele

What I really have to learn when sewing is to comprehend patterns better. It's difficult for me to imagine how something has to be sewn in order to look like I want it to after turning the right side out.

This is why I had some problems with the Coat's pattern. The bag consists of 2 bag parts, the straps and the lining. So far - so good. You actually sew 2 bags: one from the 2 main fabrics and one from the lining. Easy peasy - done that several times before during the last weeks. Hence: go for it! Chose fabric (It feels like I need 10 days for that!), fetched scissors, grabbed some pins and... stop! One part is wider than the other one. Ahem yes... according to the pattern you have to sew the long sides first. Ok, that did not help at all.

I decided to sew the lining first and waited for some enlightement. Which only came, when I pinned the straps to the oute parts of the bag: aaaaah, those 2 parts are not a front and a back side! You have to turn them a bit - and then you get a bag. Oooooh! If I had known that before, I probably had chosen other fabrics. Now it looks a bit puzzled - in my opinion. But as I knit on several projects at the same time, I'll need to make a few more.

The bag is perfect for sock projects: leave the yarn inside - hence it can not flip around. And if you want to take it with you, you just fold the short strap over the long one.

The bag looks a bit small, but with 23.5 cm length it is quite big: you can take aprox. 5 yarn balls in it. I will, however, make a bigger one, for sweater/ cardigan projects.

If somebody has ideas for project bags - I'll love to hear about them!

Thanks
I fiddled about it's pattern on my own. There are only few bags without shoulder straps suitable for men.

Schließlich muss man ja üben.

Wünsche allen ein wunderschönes Wochenende!

Fabrics are all taken from my "stash": jeans fabric is from my son's old trousers; the striped fabric comes from my friend, who gave me some fabrics for exercising purposes when I started sewing. Carabiner, the red ribbon and the matching D-ring come from another tote we never use. And I bought the zipper.

I inserted a batting between the two fabric layers as the plaid fabric is quite thin.

Sewing mistakes
1. the zipper, of course. In the beginning, I had a zipper which was far too thick. I assume such zippers are used in the field of ship construction. And I had - of course - those buckles on the right and left sides of the zipper. And they are still there as the bag had to be finished. My husband thinks that I did it on purpose ;) (hm, it just comes into my mind that he could read this blog ;) )
2. uncountable the times I sewed the wrong sides respectively fabrics together. Main fabric with lining and again the neverending "right sides to left sides"-issue. I have to sew more!

This video by Pattydoo helped a lot: you actually sew 2 bags - one from the main fabric and one from the lining - and put them together. And you even can make mistakes in this last step - believe me!

I'll try to improve on another bag I'll sew for me ;)

Wishing everybody a wonderful weekend!

...it's time for you to go.

When the year began, I'd never thought that there are not only Fridays, the 13th, but also whole years... and now I hope for 2014 to improve, although it's already now clear that 2014 will bring sad moments.

Well, dear 2013: you brought tons of sorrow to people I know and taught me a lot: that one never knows how long he has - that you cannot really trust people you meant to be close to you and you showed me how grabby some can turn. I now know how glad you can be if you're healthy and that there can be miles between theory and reality. But you also showed me those I can count on when I am down. Thanks for that. Nevertheless: you've got 26 minutes left and that's good.

I wish all of you a great start into 2014 and for the new year above all luck, health and people supporting you!

Dann musste aber etwas "größeres" her.

Oh dear, now I've also got a sewing machine. As a child, we had to sew all dolls' and barbie clothes. With an old table sewing machine, which had been driven with a belt and did not have any electric cables.
In the last years, I often wished I had one and finally my husband bought me a sewing machine as a birthday present this year. Unfortunately or thank god? I don't know: it's difficult to arrange the time and at the moment my hobby room looks very - let's say - creative ;)

My friend is a tailor: huuuuge advantage, as I can fire all my questions at her. In the beginning I tried to sew lines and curves onto paper and started to sew smaller projects: I sewed stars for christmas and repaired my husband's working shirts.

But then I needed something "bigger". Thanks to the internet, I immediately found something for me. I found a great tutorial for a basket on Mauswerkerin Here it is:

A lot of people are astonished about the small things I knit and crochet. Most of them would not work that small - but I don't care. But there is a huge difference between crocheting/knitting and sewing: you have to be much more accurate in sewing than e.g. in knitting. And that's one thing I have to get used to.
The basket shown above was my first try - there will be more in future. I had to sort out the position of the single parts I had to cut out, so that I will be able to embellish it with ribbons for example in future.

In the meantime I sent one of them to my sister as a christmas present, which had zigzag stitches like the one shown on Mauswerkerin's website.

The basket is great: it has just the right size for all the bits and pieces flying around and I am looking forward to sewing the next ones!

I tried a new technique on this card. Most of you will know this, of course. I also knew it, but haven't used it up to now.

The blue paperstripe has been made with embossing resist: first I stamped onto white CS, embossed with clear embossing powder and finally added distress ink to the paperstripe, so that only the paper is being coloured, not the embossed part.

If you should not know this technique (I am really slow in such things ;) ): hereis a detailed tutorial on the Splitcoaststampers' website with a link to a galery with loads of really beautiful sample-cards.

"It's time to chat": that's true to 150%: we can talk on the phone for 2 hours, and nonetheless chat for hours drinking a cup of tea.

Explanation of German words on the card:
down at the left bottom of the card is the word "Einladung", which means invitation
and at the right top you can read "Es ist Quasselzeit!" - "It's time to chat!"

Also direkt mal umgesetzt:

I'm a huge paper-lover: after finding beautiful scrapbooking paper, I do not want to use it, because it's so beautiful and would be away after using it. (the reason for not doing that in future again can be read at the bottom of this post: my personal paper-catastrophe!) That's why I keep every single scrap of paper.

I have a carton for my bigger papers, holding the papers upright. And I have a portable/ expandable paper file for my not-so-small paper scraps.I store my papers colorwise there.

Up to yesterday, I used to keep my tiny scraps in small boxes. I think, I've got more boxes than anything else. You always dig in the boxes in order to find suitable paper, but you cannot find what you need.

Scraps can be used for tons of projects and sometimes you just need a small piece of paper for a stamp.

Hence, when I saw this link on Mel's blog, I was totally thrilled. Had to try that out immediately:

Gabriele

I have tons of this translucent paper lying around: 3 yrs ago, I thought it was vellum and wondered, why it was that cheap *gg* (now I know...) You can use it for crafting lanterns, but not like the vellum we know in cardmaking for example. But here it's of great usage!

I will sort the scraps colorwise into the single pages. They are not in an order here, just wanted to show you an example. I tried different ways of adhering the translucent paper-stripes: doublesided sticky tape, adhesive and a photo-roller. They are used to adhere the stripes at the bottom, but also to separate the single "compartments", where the scraps go.

I think, that's such a great idea! I am convinced that I'll be using more of my scraps in future, as I see them at one sight and don't have to dig into those boxes.

Oh, do you want to know my biggest catastrophe of the last weeks: I keep my 12"x12" scrapbooking papers in a pizza carton and adhered a huge paper to it's lid, with a label: "SCRAPBOOKING PAPER". There were so many beautiful papers (as mentioned above: I did not want to scrap/craft them...). And then ... the labeling paper did not stick good enough to the carton... and somebody (I do not know yet, who, and I deeply hope that it wasn't me) thought, we had forgotten to throw that pizza carton away. That's so typical: never ever somebody here throws away a pizza carton without being forced to. Now all my super duper PPs are ... in the trash and I did not recognize that early enough (as I did not craft the past months). That's such a catastrophe for me!!!! In future, I WILL craft with my beautiful papers: it's much better to see them on a project, than in the trash!

Paperless Greetings,
Gabriele

This journal is meant to be a kind of playground in order to try out journal backgrounds. I want to make a BOM - but will begin that later on.

Somehow, I did not want to scrap for a long time. My head was full of important issues and problems and I sometimes sat here for hours staring onto my stash, reading your blogs... and still did not develop any idea. This journal brought those ideas back to me! I am keen on scrapping and creating something, unpacking my craft-boxes. Have to warm up a bit more, but then - I'll be able to start again :)

A small post in between about a small crochet project.

Our granddaughter sometimes calls me "Duck Granny". The reason for this can be found in the lake next door: nearly each time she is here, we visit the lake and the small duck pond. She knows the ducks since baby-age and this visit is obligatory whenever she comes to us.

After crocheting the easter bunnies, I took a fancy to Amigurumi. Shouldn't you know them, here is the correspondent Wikipedia-Link. Those small crocheting projects are so super cute and made quickly from some wool's stash.

So crocheting a duck suggests itself :)

Here it is: from Duck Granny to Marlen :)

Ich wünsch Euch was!

I love the North Sea! As soon as I retire, I'd love to move to Ostfriesland (a region in Northern Germany, situated at the North Sea)

A duck does not match to the Sea to 100%, but it prefectly fits to the background, doesn't it?
Ok, the duck is no longer here with me: first hubby took it for himself; this did not last long: as soon as Marlen saw it, it was hers ;) Those ducks perfectly fit to Lego-beds.

Hence, I have to crochet more of them. I'll try to make a fitting small cap next time. Ok, it would have been better not to write that, because it's not really likely to happen that I can do that without having a pattern.

I've just hauled my crafting box up my desk: somehow my favourite hobby loses out in the last months. I will definitely re-start that over the weekend!

Take care :)

Back in the 80s, my school sent me to an exchange programme to Yorkshire . First time being so far away from home. I had such a great time: I lived with my guest family in Scarborough (should there be somebody called Margaret from Scarborough reading this: please e-mail me :) ) - reading this city's name I always have to think of Simon and Garfunkels "Goin' to Scarborough Fair". I love Simon&Garfunkel and had lots of their records at that time.
We spent some holidays during the Easter time in the Lake District. The Lake District is a national park in England with a wonderful landscape which is famous for it's mountains and lakes.

I wish, I'd be able to visit Yorkshire and the Lake District again: it is so beautiful! My husband's, however, rather put off by that idea, as he thinks of rain and bad weather whenever I talk about England. But I'll make him change his mind ;)

We had a horrible water damage in our cellar at the end of the year. This destroyed my album with my Yorkshire/ Lake District photos. As there were no digital cameras back in the 80s, nearly all of my memorabilia disappeared.

Now that I've found Postcrossing - as reported here - I posted my wish in their English sub-forum: to receive postcards from Yorkshire and I described how much they would mean to me. Soon I received a reply from Ellen, who sent me these 4 wonderful recipe cards:

Loads of you will know this technique already, but for me... it was new territory and I really like the result.

When opening the card, you can see dark-red paper stripes on the left and the right "flap". I stamped them with a handwriting stamp (fleamarket find) and red color before embossing them with clear embossing powder. I do not really dare to use Versamark as I often read that it could damage the stamp (maybe I am wrong with that). This technique, however, also gives the possibility to have a kind of watermark - although embossed.

I used the same technique for the tag`s background on the inner card and for the photo edges there.

Aber er gibt schon gut wieder, was ich eigentlich sagen will: "enjoy the simple things".

The stamp on the right did not have the result I wanted it to have: it is a "half clock" by Rayher. It was the first time that I stamped directly onto the canvas with acrylics. Hence, some parts of the stamp do not show on the canvas. But that`s what we call "artistic freedom", isn`t it? ;)

I unfortunately don`t remember the source of the stamp on the left side. That`s why I cannot give further details on it. But it expresses quite well what I want to say with this canvas: "Enjoy the simple things!" I completed that with the letters following the clock's silhouette: "time flies too fast - enjoy every single moment". Finally I wanted to have a connection to the bird and the branch ;)

You maybe don`t see it on the photo, but I glittered the swirl on the left side a bit. Here, "in real life" it looks really great.

<img style="display:left; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 160px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggcZ_gv0kcKKIYmFT0hoO7ot5sLM9O-an2ZNEcG-toZpKKL_k6QWha10e3SpMQW3hP9n6NEL56nZZxcMVAWDlNL7yc8hPYx7vnXLRspZuygE5rvPqhUwDNG3Y3PcMQJECTvba1-J2Bqv4/s320/Canv02_Tag.jpg" border="0" alt="Tag Fly"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565340200519984642" /> <img style="display:right; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 160px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXrncjJk14HMOQgHQ0-dyIOLJKyeBhrqFbtHInhNFfg7bgBuiTUukX7rs1-mMCSlEx3SaSCOpQNvKYZ7m1ES9CXbbUNo2CLtvzIemjul9PqCLs3FQasm-cgZtFOuaTYLUw1NB9SgthRrU/s320/Canv02_Glitt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565340196080844722" />

Viel Platz ist auf diesem Tag nicht.
